On January 11, 2025, Tapada da Ajuda in Lisbon became the stage for EQUINOX, the highly anticipated solo fashion show by the young Portuguese designer Manel Baer. This event was not just a celebration of his creative vision but also a bold statement on sustainability and resilience, proving that fashion can be innovative, artistic, and environmentally conscious.
Manel, a 23-year-old designer from Beja, Portugal, is making a name for himself in the cutthroat world of fashion. His journey into the fashion world is nothing short of inspiring. I first encountered his work while searching for an outfit to wear at ModaLisboa in March 2024. One of his designs immediately caught my eye, and I reached out to see if he would let me wear it for the event. He loved the idea and, later at the event, not only did the outfit gain significant media attention, but it also brought newfound visibility to him and his brand. Since that moment, Manel and I have become friends and frequent collaborators. Beyond his immense talent, he is one of the kindest and most passionate individuals I know. EQUINOX is the culmination of his creativity and perseverance, and I couldn’t be more proud of him and everything he accomplished so far.
Leading a New Generation
At the heart of EQUINOX was a group of inspiring individuals who exemplify the tenacity of this new generation of creatives. Marco Gomes, Tatjana Jourdain, Rafaela Barreiro, and Rita Oliveira were just a few of the names driving the project forward. Yet, the show’s success was shared by every person who contributed to its execution, proving that together, we can overcome any obstacle. This was more than a fashion show—it was a movement. As their friend and someone who had the privilege of working with this team in the past, I’ve witnessed their unwavering drive to create against all odds. Let me tell you, we are not taking “no” for an answer! This new wave of Portuguese talent is ready to make dreams become reality, no matter the challenges we might face.
A Sensory Experience
EQUINOX blended fashion, music, and performance into an unforgettable sensory journey:
- Nature-Inspired Aesthetics: The collection featured asymmetrical and fluid designs, drawing inspiration from the elements. Blues represented the sky and sea, greens reflected vegetation, and earthy browns grounded the pieces. Each garment told a story of balance and renewal.
- Immersive Soundscape: A custom live soundtrack by musician Farwarmth (Afonso Arrepia Ferreira) enriched the show, enhancing its emotional resonance.
- Dynamic Performances: Choreographed by Beatriz Pereira, dancers brought life and movement to the runway, embodying themes of transformation and evolution.
- Exceeding Beauty Expectations: Rita Oliveira, known as Noir, played a pivotal role as the lead makeup artist and hairstylist. Her bold eye makeup, inspired by the collection’s palette, and wet-effect hairstyles, reflecting water and earth, brought Manel’s vision to life with unparalleled creativity.
A Collaborative Effort
EQUINOX was the result of countless hours of dedication from an incredible group of many young creatives. From set designers and lighting technicians to stylists and backstage assistants, this event was a testament to teamwork, ambition, and determination.
From My Perspective as a Model
As someone with experience walking at international runways, it was deeply fulfilling to see an incredible and innovative runway show like this happening in Portugal. Being able to support Manel and his team during EQUINOX and also to walk at the event was the perfect way to start the year. Seeing the hard work and passion that went into every detail was incredibly inspiring. EQUINOX wasn’t just a show—it was a reflection of resilience, creativity, and a refusal to settle for anything less than excellence.
What’s Next for Manel Baer?
EQUINOX was a success, winning the hearts of both the media and the attendees. Manel’s vision of blending sustainability with luxury fashion has positioned him as a trailblazer in the industry. His next goal is to take EQUINOX to an international stage, continuing to innovate while staying true to his roots in artistic expression and environmental responsibility. For me, it’s an honour to witness this journey up close. Manel, along with the rest of his incredible team, is redefining the future of fashion, proving that creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand. EQUINOX wasn’t just a show—it was a movement, celebrating the beauty of transformation and the power of ambition. I’m eagerly looking forward to seeing what the future has in store!
