Herdade da Malhadinha Nova

Behind one of Portugal’s greatest producers, the Soares family

Nestled in the heart of Alentejo, this extraordinary estate has been in the hands of the Soares family since 1998. The four family members—João, António, and their respective wives Rita and Maria Antónia—share familial bonds and a united vision for the estate. This unity has driven the remarkable transformation of Herdade da Malhadinha Nova into one of Portugal’s most acclaimed producers, a beacon of sustainable luxury, and a community hub.

A Family’s Vision

The Soares family purchased the estate over 25 years ago, drawn by a shared passion for the land and wine production. At the time, the estate was a shadow of what it is today. Though the land was fertile, it had yet to be properly cultivated, and it was far from producing the high-quality grapes that now thrive on its soils. Initially, there was no formal wine production on the property; the family’s vision and investment turned the estate into a world-class wine producer.

Under their stewardship, the land has been rejuvenated, with an emphasis on creating a balanced ecosystem that supports both agriculture and viticulture. The infrastructure has also seen significant improvements, from state-of-the-art wine cellars to luxury accommodations, all while preserving the authenticity of the landscape.

Community and Sustainability

Central to the Soares family’s philosophy is a deep commitment to the local community. They have made efforts to ensure that the growth of Herdade da Malhadinha Nova benefits the surrounding region, offering employment opportunities and investing in local infrastructure. Their approach to sustainability goes beyond eco-friendly farming techniques; they aim to leave a lasting legacy for both the community and the environment.

Their sustainability practices are evident in every aspect of the estate. From the use of renewable energy sources to organic farming methods, the estate’s operations are designed with the future in mind. Herdade da Malhadinha Nova is not just a wine producer but a luxury destination, with Michelin-starred dining experiences and premium accommodations that reflect their deep respect for nature.

Wine Production and Grape Varieties

The estate has become a renowned producer of high-quality wines, producing a range of varietals that reflect the unique terroir of the Alentejo region. Their vineyards are planted on soils rich in schist and clay, ideal for growing premium grapes. The estate primarily produces red wine grapes such as Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, and Touriga Nacional, along with white varieties like Arinto and Chardonnay.

The Soares family works closely with a highly skilled oenologist, Paulo Laureano, who has been instrumental in overseeing vine management and the winemaking process. His expertise ensures that every vintage reflects the estate’s commitment to quality. Since 1998, several years have stood out for exceptional vintages, including 2005, 2010, and 2015. Each of these years produced wines that have since become collectors’ items.

The Future of Herdade da Malhadinha Nova

While the family remains deeply involved in the day-to-day running of the estate, discussions have already begun about the next generation’s role. Their children have expressed interest in continuing the legacy, with plans to take on more responsibility as time goes on. The family is also exploring the possibility of expanding their vineyards to include new grape varieties, further diversifying their offerings and pushing the boundaries of their wine production.

Herdade da Malhadinha Nova is currently producing around 300,000 bottles of wine annually, with plans to expand this as they introduce new varieties. Their commitment to quality over quantity ensures that every bottle reflects the family’s dedication to excellence.

A Vision for the Future

The Soares family’s vision for Herdade da Malhadinha Nova is clear: to continue producing exceptional wines while maintaining the estate’s integrity and sustainability. Their goal is not only to create a thriving business but to leave behind a lasting legacy—one that harmonizes with nature and benefits future generations. Their luxurious accommodations and Michelin-starred restaurant are further examples of how the estate combines sustainable practices with luxury, offering guests an immersive experience that goes beyond wine.
