Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking- the immortal words from Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada. This year, the SS24 runways have broken the mould of florals and pastel hues for springtime by debuting an eclectic fusion of vibrant colours, metallics, animal prints and the revival of nostalgic trends.
While January is typically filled with new year’s health and financial resolutions, Spring is the time to find serenity through decluttering and refreshing your wardrobe by investing in signature pieces which can transcend from Spring into Summer.
Animal Prints
The revival of the ‘Mob-wife’ aesthetic which has been sweeping its way across social media has also been making waves in the fashion world. In an ode to the bold glamour of the 1980’s, maximalism has returned, eradicating the ‘clean-girl’ aesthetic and replacing it with big hair, dramatic make-up and animal print clothes. Whether you dare to debut a full-leopard print or are still leopard-curious, it can be tastefully integrated into looks through leopard trims, and accessories and paired with monochrome colours or denim.
Burgundy
Red featured throughout the runways last year and dominated the Golden Globes. This year, for SS24 the trend has matured like a fine Bordeaux into deep shades of burgundy. The dark, mysterious cherry colour is an elegant way to instantaneously elevate any look. High-gloss lacquered shades of burgundy are particularly popular to add a vibrant burst by incorporating the colour with accessories like blazers, bags and shoes.
Metallics
Metallics are a staple for ‘party season’ over Christmas and New Year’s Eve and are continuing to glisten well into 2024. Often hailed as the “best neutrals”, metallics can be paired with black, brown, grey, or white as well as vibrant colours making them the most versatile and eye-catching neutrals to simultaneously evoke old-Hollywood glamour with a futuristic flair to your wardrobe.
Fringe
Nostalgic fashion was further revived by the abundance of fringe fashion across the runways. The playful detailing is perfect to incorporate into your wardrobe with dresses, jackets and bags to give your outfit a dreamy boho-chic twist. Fringes add ample movement to outfits, serving as a jewellery-like embellishment to a perfect festival or holiday look.
Ice Blue
Ice blue is one of the coolest trends dominating the runways this Spring. The glacial blue has replaced the typical Spring pastel colours, with its cooler, slightly silver and edgier undertones. Ice blue can be styled in several ways depending on the occasion; black for a contemporary and edgy look, white for an ethereal, angelic approach and burgundy or animal prints for more fashion-forward colour blocking.
White
This year is all about utilising the colour white with an abundance of flowing fabrics, such as chiffon to create an ethereal, otherworldly appearance. Sheer whites are perfect for longer summer days and beach vacations, and as a neutral colour can be paired with an abundance of bold accessories
Trench Coats
Although it is finally the time of year to shed the many winter layers to reveal your new Spring Style, a trench coat is a great investment to navigate through the trans-seasonal weather and April showers.
Trench coats are timeless and on-trend making them a ‘forever classic’ which can be recycled and re-worn year-on-year.
Business Casual
Amid the flowing chiffons and sheer looks, business casual has once again emerged from major fashion houses with a playful twist. Pencil skirts, blazers, and button-up shirts featured on the runways in a rather unusual fashion as they were constructed with sheer, tulle, mesh, and chiffons. This elegant take on ‘business casual’ is the perfect juxtaposition to embrace androgynous dressing as it combines celestial feminine fabrics with the masculine angular style of ‘business-casual’.
